Where's the Diagnostic plug? - cosmic_splatter - 07-22-2014 Folks I'm put a deposit on a 1995 Geo Tracker. It has a check engine light on and we were trying to obtain the code, but there doesn't seem to be a diagnostic port. The connector seems to be plugged into a cable as shown in the photo. Anyone have any thoughts on this? This does not correspond with the B-C pin shorting tutorials on the internet. http://i957.photobucket.com/albums/ae59/johnhovan/IMGP2230_zpsaab5a086.jpg thanks, John RE: Where's the Diagnostic plug? - fixkick - 07-22-2014 the connector has no other connector its female conn. (with rubber cap if not missing cap) and has blue-yellow wire, unlike all others. it is in the front of the battery, until 1996, where it moves 2 feet forward to right headlight shell.(for timing and for idle duty sets) whats your VIN,? use 3 xxx the end. shoot photo of front of battery, and i can point it out. from above. nice Florida car, clean, no rust, very much envy.... 96 here http://www.fixkick.com/CEL/DLC/96real.JPG 95FSM http://www.fixkick.com/IGN_timing/96DLC1.jpg E , part http://www.fixkick.com/ECU/92-95MPI-eng-schematic_files/92-95components1w.jpg that's a federal tracker. the ECU probably has code 51s, for ever, bad EGR. most do. (my wild goose bet, lol) guess 2, the rubber cap fools you that it's not there, does many, , we can find it the one wire color is the key. and location, on 93. is battery. RE: Where's the Diagnostic plug? - cosmic_splatter - 07-22-2014 Fixkick, Is that wire going to the positive terminal on the battery a factory setup? Or, is it possible they cut the diag port off and are doing something nefarious with the diags? It seemed to drive ok, but when it was cold it sorta hesitated when I gave it gas. After driving a bit it ran fine. John Here is the vin... 2CNBJ1869S6929xxx The car is like new except for the fuel tank bar. I need to weld a new one in since it's gone and the tank is sitting on the guard. They put a gforce box on this car. Should I take it out or leave it? This tracker looks new. Drives very good too. http://i957.photobucket.com/albums/ae59/johnhovan/IMGP2227_zps090cc30b.jpg http://i957.photobucket.com/albums/ae59/johnhovan/IMGP2221_zps9fda9b46.jpg RE: Where's the Diagnostic plug? - fixkick - 07-22-2014 not stock, that wire to batter Plus the gforce thing is useless, only only for tuning custom EFI , you dont have. S is is 1995, year model. made in CAMI plant canada. on that day (late 1995) ,they move the DLC to the right front head light shell back side. the first 96s have 2 oxygen sensors 96'/ has 2 egr VSV solenoids. one behind the intake. DLC1 (of 2) diagnostic link connectors. is in front of battery with a rubber cap. DLC2 under dash is mostly for 4speed trans, a/t, that you dont have. open drivers door, see door jamb sticker and true factory build date. ive never seen a 12/1995, I wonder what tricks happened then. 1 month before fed, mandated OBD2. ive seen this on X90s. seen the very odd transition cars, with 1995.5 , (OBD1 early EGR in a 1996 FED body) very odd. DLC 1 , its tucked in nice and tight. (this is 8valve, most 16valve have 6 pins ) we had 1 poster long ago that the PO, cut every extra connector off the car. he said, the PO. said,"he hated extra parts" 4 snips and gone. RE: Where's the Diagnostic plug? - cosmic_splatter - 07-22-2014 fixkick, If the car in fact does have a 51 code like most do, should I ignore it or clean the EGR valve and system? In other words, is it important to have the EGR system working properly? thanks, John RE: Where's the Diagnostic plug? - fixkick - 07-23-2014 thats easy if car idles ok, then it runs ok. but if it leaks it stalls. if its packed solid in carbon the valves run very very hot and will not last. the EGR keeps them cool as you drive. smog reasons are obvious, acid rain, etc, NOX is nasty stuff. RE: Where's the Diagnostic plug? - cosmic_splatter - 07-23-2014 Sounds like I should pull it and clean it proactively. Not sure I want to burn up valves. RE: Where's the Diagnostic plug? - fixkick - 07-23-2014 just do the stall test. press the diaphragm and see if engine stalls or runs real slow say 500rpm or less. that be the EGR working. the egr main is way in the back . and the whole path is huge. on 1995 and very very hard to do. see my egr 95 page. http://www.fixkick.com/EGR-Gen2a.html and this, lil. horror,,, those are , egr injector nozzles, and very very hard to clean. Cast in place. we have more views and if one packs the others cause imbalance in the other 3 and they may over inject. in fact i have a slide show on this. http://www.fixkick.com/sensors/EGR/97-clog-city/html/index.html RE: Where's the Diagnostic plug? - cosmic_splatter - 07-24-2014 Fixkick, I was reading your website talking about the two different 16v engines. Based on my VIN above and photo of the engine, do I have a TPI? I haven't seen a multiport engine. thanks, John Your Text Describes the two engines: The 16v G16B motor was introduced by Suzuki in the USA in 1992, For the Geo Tracker, that was the same year, for this 16 valve head, as an option. The 16v is a tighter smog engine, (has dry runners) that is, it runs cleaner with MPI injection. and 15 more HP with 16 valves sucking air. (The Cailf. Air Reseach board banned the 8v in 94') The TBI engine runs a wet intake, manifold and runs poorly under some conditions. (MPI was the cure, and much later direct injection) The MPI has vastly better cylinder by cylinder AFR mixes, and are equal. RE: Where's the Diagnostic plug? - fixkick - 07-24-2014 all i know is 93 tracker and your photo 2CNBJ1869S6929xxx its a G16B , MPI engine, it has 4 injectors, see them, the TBI is one injector, some call it SPI, single point injection or other names ,for get that , its single injection throttle body, as seen on G16A 89valve engines. the G16B is 16valves. not 8, that photo clearly shows the 16vPLENUm and TB. the VIN has a very accurate engine code, unlike Suzuk the code is 6, see it, in place mark 8 digit 8 is a 6, that is GM parlance for G16B MPI. NO. the photo shows MPI, and the RPO and the VIN and the hood tag all show MPI. my vin decoder page shows that. and so does your glove box door. the GM RPO tag states the engine code. here are the actual micro ufiche code photos i made http://www.fixkick.com/specs/RPO/RPO.html L01, is MPI (gm calls it MFI, my guess, multi fire injection) MPI is the correct ASE/SAE names. the MPI runs dry runners. (superior in all way) the TBI runs wet runners like carbs do and run like crap cold,, (smog and bad running) most folks would never notice. calif banned the 8v first. (calif C.A.R.B rulings) in 1996 the fed banned it here. OBD2 rules killed it. note that the SAME RPO tag has the Smog rules on this car. NB2 or 6? or? 16valve MPI throttle body. shown on side. it is side draft body. TBI is top down draft. MPI body here. http://www.fixkick.com/fresh-air/Slide_Show/images/95-TB-16V-iac.jpg the TBI (SPI, ?) is here http://www.fixkick.com/fresh-air/Slide_Show/images/Iac-inj-view1w.jpg note my photo has that SINGLE injector in full view, (glory) |
