even in 1990 (Suzuki offered Auto hubs as an option) (usa)

OEM style hubs.
stop car,shift 4wd (H./L) drive slow, and they lock, if not they are dirty or rusty inside.
how to test autolocks is not easy. ( but ,on ice, drag the foot brake and see all 4 wheels work.)

manuals are easy to test, as you do the service them , you have tire off the ground and you just feel it, turn the tire, feel the CV turn (or if in 4wd and in gear) you cant turn it.(locked)
the the thing is , with autos, how can you safely check them tires off the ground. (the axle must spin to get a lockup) { you might find spin the tire backwards off the ground , locks them}

the spin by hand you did, im not sure, the RPM that must be attained to get a lock. but i bet (dont know) that you can't get there easy with a hand test.

keep in mind too, that this car sends all torque to the tire that slips. (no LSD) so drag brakes with left foot. as you drive to get close to true, LSD.
my jeep does this with ABS brake drag, (called virtual LSD (no axle LSD ).

whats worse there are 4 styles of autolocks ive seen. (prev. owners might have changed them out)

and some aftermarket types?

when they work ,folks love them. but servicing them is tricky.

Thanks for the help I am going to install a brand new set of manual locking hubs. I am also going to install a new timing belt I am
assuming that the spark does not come from the ecu but from the distributor. I was surprised at how much oil is in the crankcase
holds 6 quarts?
