Tranny Noises
#1
I have a 99 Chevy Tracker with a 1.6 liter engine and a five speed manual transmission and four wheel drive.  When in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear and revving high (around 2600 to 3000 RPM) it has begun making a whirring or whistling noise.  The noise is not present in fourth and fifth gears.  Is there something wrong with my tranny?  If so, what should I do about it?

Also - Just had this in the shop to replace the rear transmission seal.  It was not making the noises before I had the shop replace the seal. They said they also replaced the rear lower bearing.

Thanks,

Joe Tracker

ok, you posted great evidence.
4th gear is not a gear at all, (magic) it is 1:1 direct drive and 5th is actually overdrive. and is great symptoms this. told by you.

gee the shifter tip , plastic tip ID #27 is bad as all are this old and now rattles like mad.(shifter tip ,metal to metal failure does)
http://fixkick.com/tranny/shifting/rails.JPG
a transfer case seal right> (i bet) was worked on, (4wd has 2, one to rear and one seal to the front axle.

They said they also replaced the rear lower bearing.<< hints of transfer case 4wd , front drive bearing to front axle. and its seal sure can leak.
(on what ?_)
the rear seal is a part on the transfer case. unless they pulled the transfer case to get the 5sp box actual, did they?
I guess, u-joints bad too.
a U-joint can fail and if ignored, the vibration (huge) beats the seal front of it to death. by it would make noise in 4th gear (1:1 fake gear, main shaft is locked up)
please be clear on what they touched,

The right side of the 5speed box the bolt there must never be removed. only the female 4sided 10mm plug for level checks, is the level of GL4 lube good?
the wrong bolt pulled wrecks the gear alignment.(reverse that always spins, , clutch out.
see why here, reverse gear makes noise, not now aligned, http://fixkick.com/tranny/images/images/problems1.jpg

there are many seals here.(5)
front of 5speed pinion
rear of 5speed, seal
front of transfer case seel
rear of transfer case seal upper to rear prop shaft
transfer case lower to font prop haft seal.

the casing from 5sp to xfr case , center empty case (adptor) is dry,
there is no oil in the center case.
there is an open always tiny drain hole in the bottom of the center case that if drips oil we know 1 of 2 seals above are bad. deep inside.

when the 1,2,3 gears make noise and tranny fluid is full up to right filler hole plug . is it, never ignore this at 60k mile tune up, it's just simple check.
at noise rest your HAND on the shift lever top (firmly down) does the NOISE END??????????????

finding noise that only happens moving fast is not easy , nor safe.

I use a Steelman electronic stethoscope to find noise with microphone clamps. 10x more safe way to find moving noise.

noise., moving from tranny (seems)
does noise in if you left foot slam in the clutch pedal.? to floor,
no noise ever in neutral
noise only of left foot rides the clutch pedal, bad TOB throw outbearing
5sp or transfer case fluids low or OMG DRY
bad U-joints
makes noise in 2wd but not 4High.4wd. or the noise only in 4wd. or both.
or noise ends as next poster said, hand resting on gear shift know ends noise, yes, then part ID 27 is bad (plastic,or now missing)

I hope you guys not mind a side question here.

> ..at noise rest your HAND on the shift lever top (firmly down) does the NOISE END?

What are we trying to diagnose here? Just asking as mine gives a noise if I rest my hand on the shift lever. When no pressure on lever, no extra sounds heard. Just asking as I know mine is old and 2nd gear synchro is definitely near end of life.

jwunsch, that is noise from the long shift lever , plastic tip piece a wreck, most are now this old.

see my page in #27 part ID shift tip bad

If the plastic shift tip bushing #27 is bad, worn or missing, the above shift H gate will fail, and you WILL be locked out of gears. or super hard to reach.

@fixkick

Do you happen to have Suzuki part number for the part #19 could it be 28117-60A00 (Found image from internet where #27 (and its part# is shown) and there is another plastic thingy with that 2811... number.

Amazingly I was able to find #27 from here in Finland, but I would like to buy both of those. It's starting to be bit of Sherlock Holmes thingie here in 5,5M people country to find parts for car this old (and not ever common here).

Thanks for the info.. I definitely want those parts before they completely fail.

5speed m/t box .QOD , question of they day. wow FInland, welcome to this old old forum gathering dust.

sorry me late to the party again, email updates are dead here.
#19 is gear, and suzuki does not sell gears now, we can buy most bearings and all seals. and brass syncro rings.
most suzuki parts this old are no longer stocked.
learn that some suzuki dealers have there own private network to all stores in you country or beyond. they did here in USA backwhen.
best is do google www searches for exact part numbers.
get hits if lucky but for this box , wow rare.
what year box is it. or car.
what engine/transmission, is there. G16b + 89 to 1998 5speed? 1999 up cars changed. so posting vIn with xxxxx at the end parts are 10x more easy to find
buy parts by VIN first, or get wrong parts. easy.

the last gear I bought was ID #1 and was told then 2008? last one on earth buy our dealer now closed forever.

that same page his this rare suzuki list of parts m/t 5sp

https://fixkick.com/tranny/5sp-parts/4wd-box-parts.pdf

miss that, I made it. above pdf. from real suz. parts data base.

#19 is 2nd gear , 24220-60a01 (60a means as old as 1988 and not changed now)
#27 is just a bearing, any bearing maker reads the actual bearing # on said side of bearing can can cross it to vast bearing makers, sure can. they are metric bearings.
2nd gear, worn also means cluster bad too. of you look both 2nd gear bearings are bad. or overheated blue colored.

all roller bearings are super easy to source. world wide, all are, needle bearings toss coin.
seals too are easy with old # and logo makers name decoded. and crossed easy
ever see the ebay rebuilders kits for this 5sp box. bearings _ seals, and all brass syncro's in a kit. google for kits.

gears are not sold now new, just some rare NOS
I bought a 2 used tranny
and with 2 boxes on the bench and 1 kit
gained a very good box rebuilt, watch of the locking shaft balls. those are tricky do not force them. or boom.

noise
now hear this, if the silly jiFFFFylube goons, tried to service the 5speed box, MINE IS PAINTED RED WITH 'NO' IN RED NEXT TO 54
and they remove the right side smaller bolt , oops that is not any filler, that is the bolt 54
that was reverse idle gear mount
and now the calibration is lost on that gear
and wants to make noise. but i BET FULL TIME NOISE EVEN IN 4TH.
even not in REVERSe the 2 Reverse gears spin as those are married and dogged in to the cluster full time spinning.
4th gear is not really a gear at it is main shaft locked up for 1:1 ration. no gears under load , no reduction at all.
but in 4th gear lots of things spin.
gears 1,2,3, are noisy not 4th/5th

seems me bad main shaft bearings only for 1 to 3.
bearings, 2,17,20,22, and 30 can be bad.
in 4th all those are dead and clocked out. (shaft locked 1:1)
4th gear locks out man bearings
and unloads all torque off of the cluster as it spins free, no load.

the best way to find it is full dismantle and inspect all bearings for loose (play ) and gears for damage and overheated evidence, turns blue the teeth.
if it seems box ran dry it is just a box if junk now.
get a 2nd box used, from car-part.com (sorry usa wreckers)

MY JEEP WRANGLER, 5SP M/T HAS 2 BOLTS , BOTH HAVE CASTING MARKS, "NO TOUCH". flange head bolts with words forever. Love it.
