1991 3spd auto ""HELP!!!"
#20
even reverse?
i presume level on dip stick are correct in park (hot or cold engine spec?)
the 3speed is pure mechanical. 1970 TH180. design, (back before computers, and later just TCC lock up solenoid added, only) seen on 1969 Opel first.
there are no electric inputs that can cause that.

do a full flush and filter.
there is no other hope.

the book shows doing the stall test, in Drive, and reverse. (yours fails this hard)
my guess is the stall test fails, hard. rpm races, called slip or flare. stall test failed.

then next test, if filter and ATF clean and at proper levels is the LINE PRESSURE TEST, if this fail the the trans needs and overhaul.

stall (my a44de does 1900 rpm ) the 3L30 may do 2500, stalled.

line test: (fsm quote on my 3L30 (Tm180) page.

( so car drove ok with 5sp) ?
if not? can you hand push car, ?
can you spin all tires easy off the ground?
in 2H (mode) and 3l30 in neutral, can you , spin the rear drive shift with one rear tire off the ground>
?

keep in mind all A/T transmissions that have less gears, 2 speed and 3 !
they slip the clutch more, to act as gears. (the true meaning of a slush pump is the TH180)
the 4speed has tighter clutch and slower stall speed. (and runs a wider range of gears to avoid the slip)
today some one 9 gears, and even less TC slip, (saving fuel, and reducing smog and carbon foot prints)
but the old 3L30 is a more reliable box.... so.... it is a cool Lil. box.... ?
once car is moving the and clutch packs not slipping, it may upshift, and if the governor works ok, it too has secret hidden screens that clog

keep i mind the stall test is all 100% TC slip, not clutch packs.
the engine is 80HP at flywheel.
this 80HP is what causes the STALL speed, to be what it is , and is 100% TC slip. (if too low stall rpm the engine is weak)
but if clutch packs slip, the TC may not slip at all, just the clutch packs.
there is no way to tell this. (unlike modern cars with three VSS to read )
but the line test is next,

so is this a 4wd car, you should do a signature, so we can keep track on it.

1991, 8v, 3L30 (MX1 RPO GM code ) 2door? , 4wd? (was 5sp)
