RE: Need to Know About Bypassing the Fuel Pump Relay to a Manual Toggle Switch - YemayasMoon - 05-09-2013

Thanks so much, Kick. As usual, you're awesome! Smile

I will be doing all this come the beginning of June, and will get back with my results then. In the meantime, I'm stuck at home with Jr. lolol If you think of anything else, I'll be checking here daily, for lack of anything else to do. Big Grin

First thing I will do, will be to replace the CEL bulb, then everything else...

RE: Need to Know About Bypassing the Fuel Pump Relay to a Manual Toggle Switch - fixkick - 05-09-2013

yes, the sad thing, even if you test the CEL lamp (dead) by doing the FSM stated procedure, (grounding the cel pin on the ECU connector. (ask)
it just may be bad. and if bad needs changing. (many cars; the PO removed it , to fool new owners)

the replacement is a tedious job. but not like replacing a heater core. hard,
The speedo head must be removed.
i can do it in 1/2hr. but first time, 1hr and there are some tricky parts (the speedo cable will fight you , every inch of way)

i have a page , just for this procedure,
best is to by the #18 GE lamp first.

http://www.fixkick.com/power-elect/cluster-pull/cluster-out.html

notice , i had to drop the steering, wheel, about 10-20degrees' down and to do so, you have to lean how to by pass the security screws. blocking this step (ask)
there is an FSM page, that covers all this, and is free to view..... online.... (ask)

once by passed future work is 10x more easy here, and replacing all lamps on the rear, saves future, work. as the lamps are not all so good at 24 years.

for you i revised my no tools page,
it now has free tests in RED to show what you can do , white zero tools (1 cent or less)

22 things

i revised the speedo pull out page too, and dash out to match it.

at step 1 here

RE: Need to Know About Bypassing the Fuel Pump Relay to a Manual Toggle Switch - YemayasMoon - 05-10-2013

Thanks Kick. Smile

I checked the pages you linked to, and read them all through. Great! This is something I can do while waiting for next month; take the dash apart.
My instrument panel has been pretty dim over the years, so it'll be good to have some lights that actually illuminate the speedometer for me at night. Had to squint to see it after dark, even though the lights were on; weakly on... lolol

I think I understand the steering wheel drop issue, and it shouldn't be very hard; minus the wiring for the ignition key, as I rewired that to a farm-tractor ignition, and popped that down to the left of the steering column a few years ago. My steering column ignition key now merely unlocks my steering for me after starting Jr.

Now, I have also gone through to your link for the bulbs. It say 2 of the #158 bulbs, 1 #18 bulb for the CEL light, and then it just says, "many" of the #74 bulbs - How "many" would that be, (lol) so I know how many to order from "Bulb Town?"

Thanks, Kate

depends on options.
the idiot lamps , some are options.
cruise and
4wd ,that are options.

see them all here. off my schematic page for 89.
12 lamps in all, 2 park and dim bulbs, i assume youve found the dimmer, knob. i think the schem. shows 1 , illum bulb but most have more. for each guage..
14?total? see speedo slide, below is no cruise head.

Thanks Kick. Smile

Now, little story here... When Jr first quit starting, last week, I had pulled what I thought must be the fuel relay, and took it to my local auto parts stores. The reason I pulled this part, is because it was hanging down, hovering over my clutch pedal, and I had never seen that before. Anyway, the all the guys at the various auto parts stores told me the part I was holding was the brake relay, so I looked up the fuel relay online, and it looked quite different from the part I had in my hand, so I figured they must be right, and plugged that little part back into where it was hanging.

My friend, the woman I live with, went ahead, behind my back, and ordered a fuel relay. That part was delivered this morning, and she gave it to me, saying, "Well, Happy Mother's Day." Go see if that fits on Jr. It WAS the exact same part that all the guys at the parts stores said was a brake relay.
This is it: (the old one)

I plugged the new one in, and Jr started up right away, hardly any smoke, and no revving at cold start like he has been doing for years. lolol

So.... I am mobile again, and still looking forward to doing all the other tests including first changing the bulbs in the dash. At least I have my ride back. Big Grin

Franken_KickTOR, fueling ,etc. - fixkick - 05-12-2013

Congrats, nice room mate, with $150 to spare ! very nice. so glad its not a bad ECU.
there are only 2 sources , suz, is $112
http://www.fixkick.com/buy-parts.html#main89

even more amazing, is the part you got, does not work on any 89 Suzuki Side kick , not at all is that part used in 1989
so it is more than a Franken_KickTOR, it is hacked beyond, just a starter wire, that was the least of the story, its a major hack job.
the stock cars (all) have a 9 pin MAIN. that 4 pin is for a 91.

got the SMP relay off rockauto.com its not cheap. this is a 1989 , after market , main relay, and costs more that
SMP sells the RY-952, i think is the only aftermarket part, for this 9 pin relay , and costs 40 bucks more than the stock suzuki part...

ecat.

btw , the FSM shows all; the parts, all the paths all the harness breakout points, and colors, i recommend a $15 FSM. off fleabay , i do.

here is the correct 89 part

RE: Need to Know About Bypassing the Fuel Pump Relay to a Manual Toggle Switch - YemayasMoon - 05-12-2013

I asked her where on earth she found it, and she said it was at a website called oemsuzukiparts.com for $32.89 WOW!

There was not a pink wire in the plug that the relay plugged into.

I took Jr for a drive, and he drove okay, but still not good power going up-hill. Also, with the new relay, Jr's RPM at idle is at around 300... not good. So I guess I now need to adjust the idle???

the Franken-KickTOR ! - fixkick - 05-12-2013

Quote: The FRANKen KICK or FRANKenKicktor ! : "i rewired the ignition key, as I rewired that to a farm-tractor ignition"
its frankenKICKtor , and all time first .

YOUR 1989 MAIN RELAY IS LONG GONE, ITS NOT THERE, THE 9 PIN RELAY IS GONE. THE 4 PIN NEVER CAME ON ANY 89. EVER.

ISC 89 GOT THIS STILL (IDLES SPEED CONTROL DEVICE)?

back to idle
NO functioning CEL LAMP, so what if the ECU is flashing, "dead Idle switch DTC #44", all day, and you expect the idle to work. ? it wont ..not ever,

YOU REWIRED THE IGNITION.
so that defeated many a features to the ECU. , Ripping out MAIN.
The ecu monitors, starting, so it can tell if you are key crank starting or push starting or starting in gear.
it also controls the operation of the logic in the 9 pin MAIN/pump relay. , my guess after defeating all that, someone yanked out the real main
and wired it like a 91. (im very close to the truth?)
Quote:the real post is :
"How to run 89SIDEKICK , with no ignition , switch, or main relay (stock) and not catch on fire.?
nor any drawing made of the illegal mods.
most shops don't like to work on cars with defeated crash and burn logic, due to "SMART", or Insurance co. forbids it.

post the photos of the hacks, and i promise, answers get better 100% ..... for sure......
or factory drawings, with red inked mods. (my schematic pages cover it)

PC paint. style edits are easy.
-- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
my guess is the story really is.
1: ignition switch failed, , it costs too much to replace, so hacked in $3 toggle. ETC.
2: now the MAIN is dead. (yes, the work together as TEAM)
3: so hacked in a alien main -fuel pump main relay (off 91+ car...). (unknown, no photos, relay pn not revealed.)
4: now the ECU is pissed. now that, the start and clutch logic is defeated. ( if the logic is wrong, the ECU can think, its cranking for ever, or? you name it.)
5: CEL burned out last year, ( now blinded by lack of light, LOL)
6: idle 300......

I say , it's amazing it runs at all. ( If you crash, (gawd forbid) run like hell. you defeated the safety features...)
Fuel fires can be a beach. Youtube it.

RE: the Franken-KickTOR ! - YemayasMoon - 05-13-2013

Jr has a lot more under the hood, like the EGR...; this is how Jr looks:

The Ignition is a tractor Key ignition; this is it:
