The Suzuki Sidekick 3 Speed Automatic transmission 3L30

MY FAQ:

Suzuki 3L30 Facts, the 3SP slush pump tranny.
Facts that keep your head straight.  (opinion in  red , fact in black ,I pray)

  • Not checking Pump oil pressure first is a great waste of time. The tranny can not shift correctly with low pressure. See FSM.
  • The base tranny (not 4wd parts or tail shaft adaptor )  fits many cars,  see list below.  (  as far back as 1969)
  • If you see a tranny sitting in the dirt , in a wrecker with no tag, and it has the suzuki 4wd adaptor (ID#11 below) ,then that tranny is a match.  See why? , well it is unique to Suzuki 4wd.
  • Many of the parts inside your transmisson are unique to your car , Modulator valve (load senses) Governor (speed sensed on axle ratio) , optional TCC lockup. and planetary gear ratios.
  • The Main case may be the same on all models of cars with TH180s ,part ID #1 below.
  • All the parts inside all the models can be cross referenced at any tranny parts house using their catalogs.  No sane man has yet tried, surely not me. Go for it,and send me the TABLE!
  • Working on Any 3L30 with out the Suzuki or GEO FSM  is crazy ; they have a whole section called "ON CAR DIAGNOSTICS", why let $20 stop you from getting a FSM?
  • The transmission is complex , more so than the Electric 4SP (TCM) shifted tranny.  It can have a simple problem or a burried leak.  There are no guarantees.
  • If you drive it with low pump pressure you will burn up the clutch packs.  (slipping is it?)
  • The Main Filter (or screen) clogs or the tiny hidden filters clog in the Governor and you can't get to 3rd gear
  • The VAC modulator can rupture its diaphram and now  going up hill the car dont down shift. (load sense) ( the Throttle body will suck ATF and engine will smoke all the time)
  • The same vacuum mod, can leak inside the tranny causing delayed upshifts full time.
  • The Governor can fail.-so can its own screens.
  • The Governor , and VAC modualator can both be replace ,with tranny IN CAR.
  • The  ECU activates TCC , electrically and by own ITS decisions.
  • Make sure part 19 retracts or the kick down will be stuck in PASSING mode. (delayed shifts all 3) So will any retracted failure of the Kickdown cable (obviously).
  • The Governor can be swapped after removing the transer case.
  • HERE are all those FIDDLY parts that make slush pumps a joy (LOL) to work on.
  • Many 2wd Kicks like to fail bushing #124 and make noise driving.
  • Rebuilt transmissions are very very expensive.  $1000 here, others are more.
  • See end of this doc for rebuild kits , takes a week to do this job.
  • The 2wd tanny has too long a tail shaft, but you may be able to swap them, but it will be lots of work, changing out the rear planetary gear set.
