Yep i tested the o2 sensor but i see what ur saying and these holes are close enough to the o2 sensor thst they coule absolutely be..most likely intermittently..affecting the air fuel ratio or making the o2 sensor readinggs go nuts. In fact that would make a TON of sense as to why it runs perfect at times and then sputtery at others and then it go away. And cant reproduce it lol.

Like PERFECT sense for it being rich even after thermostat fix at times anf yhen sputtering anf lean at other times.. Basically intermittent, opposing conditions happening because the o2 sensor is working lol but the holes are skewing the readings? Is that about right?

The thermostat fix btw helped freaking TONS and was 100% the classic "PO put on 1mm paper gasket when it needed 5mm o ring in 4mm lip so it was floating 3mm for sure

I will do as said and..just for now because its a quick fix ill do the putty to test it but i am buying a $120 flux core welder that works on 110 and doesnt need gas..i am going to do body and (better) exhaust work with that so it'll pay for itself the first use.

Thanks again for all of the help on this. All in all i seem to have at least a good handle on this. I found your EGR section too and got some carb cleaner. I have the 8v..such a great engine when u take care of it and have it Working proper.

Can't find mileage but last timing belt was put in 2014 so as soon as i have the few immediate dafety needs done..and s new set of tires which will get it inspected..then im going to ro as youve said and put in a gates timing belt and water pump before it goes bad. Not interfetence engine but still...

Thanks for all you have taught me.

ahh wow the floating STAT will make any one pull out hair,  sorry that happened to you.!!!

MIG weld is great.  have one here love it , can even stitch weld thin steel like body parts,  when done and ground flat , invisible.

the Tbelt if low miles is ok,  heat and miles kill it.  if no miles and or cold climate it lasts longer, 2014 is pretty new belt.  it may be very new looking of viewed.
some can go 100k but that is  pushing luck. and is free running,  (head not milled 4 times and valves not set gross wrong.)
have friend that has 4x milled and almost runs on diesel fuel, (joking 1/2) and pings like mad no matter what he does. no new heads in his country.
I wonder if his enigne free runs now,  suzuki rule is 1 mil cut< or is it 10? forgot ,so as to keep free  running status, and more. (no ping)
I wish now I set the valves wrong to find out the valve error that can make valves kiss piston tops. (sadly forgot to do that){by hand turns only}

The exhaust Bark or PUTT.
goes to positive pressure then negative, (vacuum) on all engine, worse on less cylinders.

here is why the PUTT ends and sucks in AIR on all EFI engines. called the B wave, it sucks in 20% Oxygen from AIR and 20% is HUGE that O2 slams to 0v.
I think it is worse at idle, has longer time to suck from afar. The A wave makes the EGR work via the MOD.valve for egr I call this the BARK tube.

on OBD2 car we can see the O2 go dead or shift low, offset, classic leaks. scanned oBD2.
