Some say ? 1.8L and 2.0l I-4 Suzuki engines. have same block and head. That implies the 2.0 is a stroker ? The J-series engines have been in use since 1995 and are still in production - I believe they first appeared as the J18 used in the Baleno/Esteem and the SideKick Sport 96/98 USA , the J20 (which uses the same block & head) seems to have appeared around 98 (Vitara & Grand Vitara) and has also been used in the Aerio & SX4. There's also a 2.3 Litre J23 version. J20s are still offered in SX4s and the current Grand Vitara line up. This information may help parts swappers. The 1.8L in the Esteem has a center routed exhaust header that will hit the mounts in a Vitara/kick. Lots of motor parts are the same on these 1.8L /2.0L DOHC I-4s but not induction or exhaust. Finding 1.8L parts in the USA is very hard, they only sold 9000 Sports 1998 year USA. good luck with used parts for 96-98 SPORTS ! And the Aftermarket don't like to make parts for RARE cars."sports are rare" Id never buy a Sport unless, it was near free and running good. Suzuki sold 9000 cars total in 2012, in canada (small) in the USA Suzuki's are shutting down. 2012 Chapter 11.
