1991 3spd auto ""HELP!!!"
#11
Currently not drivable ,, so no road tests ,, rpm, and trans I'm not sure of hence the question,, but also I am not sure I dont have a seized wheel ,/hub bearing car sat for over 2 years in a driveway....""someone else's project that got put on hold."" I have running high idle maybe due to vacuum,, or other.. but runs.
Shift into drive and apply throttle and the car will not move till I get rpms to 2500 or more.. but again could be bad bearing, seized caliper etc etc...

Also the diagrams are great but they all look like spaghetti to me not book smart only hands on smart...
Thank you again will have more info soon, weekends here time to wrench..

Another question I cant find an direct answer to I have in the current truck auto lock hubs can I change them for the manual lock ones from the donor truck,, or is each axle different.,,..

in the case of barn finds (or the like)
its a fish and cut bait moment.
omg, what to do first.?

1: what makes me safe and others, brakes.! wins the toss as does fuel leaks.
2: fluid levels, make the machine happy, and it safe. all levels ok, and fresh if savvy.
http://www.fixkick.com/All-Pdfs/Other-Ma...2pages.pdf
3: engine runs, ok it does, somewhat. (im sure lots of probs.. but all can be cured) (the flash codes checked now 12= ok)
4: transmission don't slip. (stall tests) (this trans has no computer, like the 4speed has)
5: engine power good, trans upshifts , to all gears moving. (tcc will not go to lockup with wrong ECU)

this is my order for max safe people and machines.

it be all over brakes.
what if car was derivable, and then can't stop
so it's blessing this.
it can't move.
to me... and others on the road.

brakes do brakes first.

i bet it has bad calipers. sat for 2 years, and the fluild old and full of water, and bingo, all that is rusty and useless.
is ways doing this first day i got my 1991, in 2006

all new brakes.
knew I was going to drive it. so did this, first then fixed bad trans.
http://www.fixkick.com/brakes/brakes.html

even shows the trick to get rotors and drums off.
but the 91 has , drum bolts, until 1992.

new question .. being as it looks like the trans might be shot in the current truck... and I know I read this info someplace be I cant seem to track it down again,, could I run a 4l30 trans from a 96 tracker in this 91.?? or is it going to be a ecu issue.?

4L30, im not sure what that is,? "The 3sp(3L30) evolved to 4L30 today and share similar parts. " no Sidekick runs this 4L30." This transmissions are made by GM in France.
the 1996, may have a 03-72LE (4wd version of A40 series, the "A" means made by Aisin Company(Japan) our tranny has the rear 4wd adaptor if it is 4wd.
http://www.fixkick.com/slush-pump.html#4speed_fast
there are only 3 transmission. 3 variants
5sp stick , 2wd/4wd
3sp, hyrdromatic , in 2wd/4wd
4sp, TPS shifted , in 2wd./4wd
the ECU is same for 3sp and 4sp but comes in 2w/4wd version.. the 5sp, car will never shift 4sp, automatically with the 5sp ECU, takes a/t ecu +tmc.

the 4speed, from other sidekicks takes , new harnesses, ecu, TCM engine mounts, drive shifts and cross members and mounts. at the least, a big job that)
and shifter controls, consoles, cables, and all the bits and pieces to make a 4speed, autoshift.

For sure the 3L30 is the most easy , 5sp to auto conversion, by far.

.. if this 3l30 in the current truck "automatic" is bad I might be able to get a donor trans from a 4dr 3spd with OD button, but as far as I can tell that's a completely different trans which brings me back to a possible ecu issue as well as complete drive line replacement...and not sure but is TPS short for Throttle Pos. Sens., if so how does this control shifts< and if I am reading your reply correctly same ecu for 3 and 4 spd,, but different shafts and the lot for trans swap..?"
. Its like a frigging Easter egg hunt to find parts for this truck and all the eggs are green in fresh spring grass,,, way to hard to find.

so to recap ,, current truck is 91..3spd auto 4wd, 2dr no OD . 1.6 8v. TBI ,, so only option for trans is 3l30..or total retool of truck,, same as manual trans truck.. I now have 3 of these and still cant get one on the road.

yes TPS is that. (aka throttle angle sensor)

http://www.fixkick.com/JARGON.html
4sp 02-72LE is totally electronic shifted unlike the 3L30, then only similarity is they both have planetary gear sets.
the 4sp shift via electric SOLENOID valves.
The 4sp shift by virtue of the TCM (brain) The Trans, control module.
the TCM and ECU work cooperatively (any A/T labeled ECU works

my tcm page covers the TCM inputs and outputs,
the TPS is only one minor input to the TCM. (TV cable , engine load (via serial data line), engine RPM , vss (veh speed) brake signal, TPS, range selected,4L, OD slected, and Power/Normal switch)

these cars are rare, done here we see one every 3 months.. very rare.
and used parts even harder,
the there are 2 dealers on my buy parts page, that still seel parts. (no cars, but sell parts)

ok i see your frustration,
you dont like 5sp , no like shifting by hand.?
so need and auto shifted car.
many cars are sent to the wrecker for just that.. huge, the new trans, is like $1500 &up and same for labor, who's going to put $3000 in dead car?
this economic fact puts them in the junk yard or parked in a barn for ever.

the 4 speed shifts manually, with no TCM (per my page and FSM linked pages)
doing so, works like this:
1,3,OD (skips 2nd) most folks would not like skipping 2nd every day. (but some do it)
http://www.fixkick.com/tranny/slush/slid...l-mode.jpg
But on my 4speed page
you see this. (make a switch and shift all gears)
http://www.fixkick.com/tranny/TCM/test2.jpg
shift to drive, then flip the switches. (one could make custom electric shift'er and shift the box through 4 gears, forever.

now how does the TCM work.? (it just a small computer, )
here are all my photos and docs on TCM
here is the 96 schematic, (the serial line is load data sent from ECU to TCM and engine RPM "nothing trivial" that.)

http://www.fixkick.com/tranny/TCM/FSM-TCM-SCH.pdf

4sp, facts.
http://www.fixkick.com/tranny/slush/OD-f...0what.html

4sp in to a 3sp body, is covered here. on SWAPS
see example 1 on swaps page
http://www.fixkick.com/SWAPS.html#Tranny_swap

why not just drop in a good engine on the dead 4speed car.?
but needs 8v for 8v or 16v for 16v.

the hard part of automatics.
it takes a good running engine to test it. ( so when you see a dead car, you get to fix the engine first to see if the trans is even 1/2 alive, most aren't)
on 5sp, one gear always works, (clutch good)
usually they all do , but some may make noise. 5sp.

on automatics, 1 part in 200 can kill it, they are complex and cant handle say a dead bug landing in the wrong spot. (frail)
(weak pump, bad clutch packs. , leaking seals (huge) inside or accumulators leaking, and a huge lest of doom things, inside, all frail)
the 4sp is better than any 3sp, less box parts to mess up, and the shift solenoids can be tested easy and replaced easy.

on the other hand a good 5speed will last the life of the engine if you do 30k mile GL4 gear lube services. (never seen any A/t do that ever)
(ive even gone 250k miles on a clutch easy)

the real problem is the pig in the poke sack deal;?
does this car x have a good transmission, engine it , dead.
personally
I look at all 3, and go, which car do I like the most. (usually very easy , decision)
and make it all run like new.
no matter what. 1 step at a time. (id get the engine going good first.) then start testing the transmission.
id even overhaul the trans if need be.
the a/t can take 3 days work to do that, with the full kit in hand. (or a week, now that im so old)

parts
the both the 3sp and 4sp are not unique, both are based on old designs. (with 4wd rear end caps, added. (adaptors)
the TH180, was used from 1970 until beyond, 2000 year. 3l30 is only 4wd version with tcc.
the A40 series Aisin ™ box. a44de is what the 03-72le is + same 4wd adaptor. added.... so the box is used on VAST cars world wide, Toyota, even old volvo.
and all major, transmission parts dealers sell the parts and kits and full service manuals. (on CD)
any transmission shop in town can overhaul it, for sure. any Sidekick a/t box.

really if you dont break a suzuki sold only part, it's not hard to fix any sidekick
if you do the parts are here. (ask for p/n and ill give you it)
like this NJ , link. (they do have parts and can take 2 weeks to get, from way DEEP warehousing...)
http://www.suzukiautomotiveparts.com/inf...gin?dpt=11

now the engine
we can get most the parts for the engine,
finding used blocks is not easy . (short./long or stripped naked)
but all the other parts inside engine are still sold. (or rebuilt)
Only the MAF sensors are very expensive. but Cardone sells rebuilds and ECU/s

name a part, and we can find it.
or use
car-parts.com
used.

a40 boxes

http://www.shinseiauto.com/japanese/transtar/Toyota.pdf

this is what the A40 fits. vast cars.
just some.
notice how all parts in side, have a spare. listed.
many sellers... of parts, inside.
my wifes mazda had one. even used on some mini vans.

a44de (the e means electric shifted, all 4 gears)

the tcm shifts by internal TCM memory tables tables using all sensors as inputs to said table.
the table results are here.
the transmission has throttle cable TV cable inputs and TPS and engine load, road speed to govern shift points (4sp)
the charter here shows the results of those internal tables (crude chart)

the console P/N switch (power/normal) cause the 2 charts.

ok i see all this as a secondary situation ,, If i was driving it,, 5spd manual, manual lockouts . 16v , 2inch lift, 35in tires 4wd. smooth deal nice reliable truck easy to fix...BUT ,, build is for my woman, .. she sees WTF ,, in place of clutch brake gas,, so has to be reliable auto,, .. considering a 700R4 . but a crap load of work to get that one drivable as well.. if i go 2wd ONLY, much easier, but MI does get Snow,, and 4wd is a big bonus. So onward i go.. again much thanks for all the info links and feed back... looking at a 4th truck but its 2 states over ...never considered the age, totally forgot the cash for clunkers incentive in the US ,,, all Old cars got cubed.......i have seen posts about the 700r4, in the tracker as an alternative But again, no clue .. lastly , can the 4spd bolt to the output assembly of the 3sd trans or is it .. all shafts and transfer case swap,,,

ok, A kick-a-roo, same, here. ! wifi-poo has nice Jeep, with Mercedes NG1 trans. (with quasi manual mode)
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmission...WA580.html
only the 3L30 is easy, the hydramatic, (has fluid dynamic brain, no computer needed for 3 gears ,until the tcc lockup, and that can be dash toggle switch (marked town /freeway)
or use the correct ECU and it works. (a $100 used part)

get one 3l30 overhauled is best, my guess is yours are very old. and long ago worn out, (we have th180s in the old mail trucks here, used for years and max torture, USPS)
would not a 1982, 700R4 need and overhaul too? (chevy bell pattern) (well, that be everything possible is wrong for a G16 mated to any chev, trans.. all wrong, big cost and work)
then it became 4L60. A later version of this transmission, the 4L60E, is an electronically controlled variation
the latter needs a custom TCM to shift it at $400 + programming costs.
We can read all day on swaps,, there are no limits, nor lack of people doing extreme swaps, cutting welding and custom fabrication have no limits.
and doing that to 4wd is 2 times harder, or more, after all the transfer case must fit and work and align. (now that be a tough nut to crack 4wd, think extension housings)

the 4wd car at 2000 lbs (2door) is a dream car in snow.! and off road, Nimble,
http://www.fixkick.com/videos/AVI/kickin.mp4

are you asking how to put a 4speed a 3 speed car with 4wd? yes..

"can the 4spd bolt to the output assembly of the 3sd trans or is it .. all shafts and transfer case swap,,, "
my guess is, you mean , is the transfer case the same, answer yes just it is... but not prop shafts.
the 3L30 (the p/n here) includes the new Rear TH180 to suzuki 4wd adapter.
the 03-72LE has its own adapter for A44DE, that fits same exact transfer case. the tail adapters to xfr case are not the same.

the driver shafts are different on all permutations of body, trans . and 4wd/2wd.
2dr
4dr
5sp
4sp
3sp. (have all p/n)

a good trans 3L30 for $980 is here in Oregon.
http://www.transmissionsexpress.com/Tran...sions.html

+ ship and core. so that be 2x ship. (crazy costs)
a local shop is always better, drop off trans, for overhaul.

the overhaul books are here and kits. (id kit it)

so far engine is running but I cant get it to move easily seems to be slipping when I put it in drive till I get rpm to about 2500-3000, and will not move if shifted to D1 .. reverse seems to catch faster,, truck will move but I have not tried road test,, due to a lot of slippage,, maybe 1 or 2nd clutch packs are toast ,, or clogged filter- . atf is .. very red /pink to fresh for a truck this old, im thinking some one drained and tried to get trans running better, but not sure could maybe be torque converter is bad or pump.. .. again no clue defiantly something's not right... bad seal bad clutches , bad everything.

even reverse?
i presume level on dip stick are correct in park (hot or cold engine spec?)
the 3speed is pure mechanical. 1970 TH180. design, (back before computers, and later just TCC lock up solenoid added, only) seen on 1969 Opel first.
there are no electric inputs that can cause that.

do a full flush and filter.
there is no other hope.

the book shows doing the stall test, in Drive, and reverse. (yours fails this hard)
my guess is the stall test fails, hard. rpm races, called slip or flare. stall test failed.

then next test, if filter and ATF clean and at proper levels is the LINE PRESSURE TEST, if this fail the the trans needs and overhaul.

stall (my a44de does 1900 rpm ) the 3L30 may do 2500, stalled.
http://www.fixkick.com/slush-pump.html#Stall

line test: (fsm quote on my 3L30 (Tm180) page.

http://www.fixkick.com/tranny/slush/slid...-stall.JPG

( so car drove ok with 5sp) ?
if not? can you hand push car, ?
can you spin all tires easy off the ground?
in 2H (mode) and 3l30 in neutral, can you , spin the rear drive shift with one rear tire off the ground>
?

keep in mind all A/T transmissions that have less gears, 2 speed and 3 !
they slip the clutch more, to act as gears. (the true meaning of a slush pump is the TH180)
the 4speed has tighter clutch and slower stall speed. (and runs a wider range of gears to avoid the slip)
today some one 9 gears, and even less TC slip, (saving fuel, and reducing smog and carbon foot prints)
but the old 3L30 is a more reliable box.... so.... it is a cool Lil. box.... ?
once car is moving the and clutch packs not slipping, it may upshift, and if the governor works ok, it too has secret hidden screens that clog

keep i mind the stall test is all 100% TC slip, not clutch packs.
the engine is 80HP at flywheel.
this 80HP is what causes the STALL speed, to be what it is , and is 100% TC slip. (if too low stall rpm the engine is weak)
but if clutch packs slip, the TC may not slip at all, just the clutch packs.
there is no way to tell this. (unlike modern cars with three VSS to read )
but the line test is next,

so is this a 4wd car, you should do a signature, so we can keep track on it.

1991, 8v, 3L30 (MX1 RPO GM code ) 2door? , 4wd? (was 5sp)
