Bad tranny?
#1
My father in law gave me a 1992 8valve automatic tracker, the thing hadn't been started in probably 12 years, after hours of repairs...timing belt, pulleys, plugs, pumps, seals...yada yada yada, it fires up and purrs like a kitten...then i put into into reverse and nothing, so input it back into park and it grinds like no other before finally going back in I think ...oh and I can roll it around in any gear! I'm sure the tranny is toast! But maybe I'm wrong...tell me I'm wrong!

hi Agailey
welcome !!!!!
nice father in law, can i barrow him?????
1992 TBI auto. 3speed 2dooror 4speed 4 door. 4speed has oD lamp and console p/n switch.
bad gas city hard work.... no lie... and for sure bravo that work!

i bet that was original parking reason,,,,

ok.
trans grinds, really, ouch.
1; a/t dip stick snow good level for cold, look red not black and not stink like burnt something?
2: if 4speed check fuses.
3: all gear dead?
4: id drop pan and put a new filter there,if screen there clean it,3p has screen, if sat for 12 years oil is like toxic waste with mold on top.
and ill pack filter fast,
drain it out. and then filter and 3 quarts back.

6 make sure the shifter in park and each step to rear does same at right side of trans, move in 1 to1 porportions
bad cable.? PRNDL. step by step....

i cant say you are wrong.
but it is sick. if 3sped, not a good sigh if ATF is fresh.
its slick if the manual lever on side is dead in all manully selected gears.

please check levels first.grinding is not good.

Thanks for the reply, it's a 2 door, fluid levels are very low, nothing registering on stick, gonna add fluid tommorow after work, probably drop the pan first. Is the neutral safety switch located on the passenger side of the tranny and had a rubber boot on it, it looks like it's loose from the tranny and has tranny fluid all over it.

Yes he's a great guy! And yes it does nothing in every gear! When I was cycling through gears and tapping the gas I let off to put it in park and that's when it would grind.

id drain it and put in fresh DEXRON VI (6)
the 3speed has no drain,so....

right side there is the manual lever, and PRNDL switch on end, cable shifted

the oil there may be from leaking distributor 0-rings. down to here easy .
the kick down cable can be loose. and leak
http://www.fixkick.com/slush-pump.html#3L30-leaks

the vacuum mod valve(rear of main case) can leak too, if oil drips from its vacuum nipple its bad.

most folks add drain plug , during first drain and fill. a kit sold

the filter is here

make sure pan is not rusted though.
is your car 2wd/ if yes, the governor screens are more easy to clean 10x. (inside tail shaft housing)

fluid specifications Dex 6

trans has 10.5 pints (5.25qt) includes clutch.
drained for 1 hour 5 to 6 pints come out. so put back, 2.4qt and top off to 3qt
my wild guess.12years, drained. the box is bone dry, and clutch 1/2 full
even 4qt.lost.... over time, worst case.
leaving very little 1.25qt. dont run the engine like this or wreck the front tranny oil pump.

good luck amigo.
