Installed ECU Part Number?
#1
How can you obtain the part number of the installed ECU? Do you have to remove the ECU completely to read it? Or, is the label visible without removing it from the car?

How difficult is it to remove the ecu to check the capacitors? Is this a 2 hour job? 10 mins? Is there any trick to removing the cover to see the circuit board?

thanks,
John

its in plain view, here.
it has 4 screws, Philips.to body, bracket and they are #3 size. big. (very tight )
it take about 15min to pull then the cover in 5min
see my ecu page, see , the remove section
do not force any connector on car, they all have locks.

the cover is very simple, crude, just 4 screws.

Do you pull the cables before taking out the screws? Or, does it help to take the screws out to give you some working room/different angle on the connectors?

Also, nearly every FSM procedure says to remove the negative battery terminal. Are these devices a good idea to install?

Fixkick, your knowledge is amazing! How many years you been working on these vehicles?

good for long term parking. sure. over one month. that switch.
yes, disconnect battery for any service, elect. unless doing live testing.\
the memory wire is hot all the time, on the ECU, you can pull the dome fuse to get the same effect.
i restored 4 now.

i think the connectors are more easy screws out. IIRC, the locks on the connectors are on top edge. and are more accessible , screws out.
i trash the Philips screws and uses real screws. 6mm.

do not inflate my ego,,,,, lol.
i help only on Suzuk, Isuzu, Daewoo, Geo cars, the underdogs. I feel their pain, for lack of information and support. on many forums.

You certainly know your stuff!

Will the dome fuse work as an anti-theft device? If you pull it or put a blown fuse in that socket, will it prevent the car from starting?

That maybe a simple way to install something to keep the car safe. However, these days, I think they would just put it on a flatbed and tow it away! lol.

no, sorry, it only makes the ECU memory forgetful at key off.
the memory loses power at key off, but not if the DOME fuse is present. dome is hot all the time.
the memory goes hot keyon, so the ECU don't care about dome at all.. the dome fuse is used to kill all DTCs stored in NVRAM. that is it.
sure a , hidden switch on the fuel pump ground. wire, is super easy.

left rear tail light see pump ground 2door, or on left cargo panal in 4door.

back in the 60s i made a Tesla, shocking device, of you shake my car you get shocked, (stun gun style)
but im nicer today....

im trying to find my records on where i bought my magnetic switch for fuel cut. (stealth key on pump) just a hidden hole somewhere, that nobody could see.

ive built silent alarms. that tell the owner you are getting ripped off. you can even have it CELL you..

cant stop the fast and serious.

anti thief
pull rotor from dizzy, take it on a trip with you, say boat or air plane trip
or the cut fuel switch.
i think alarms are useless , sans cell phone options.'
If i still had my 1935 Caddy, id have lowjack for sure. i sure miss it.
