91 tracker 8v AC oil capacity
#1
My compressor was LEAKING not seized up.. it actually worked great but was leaking between the case halves. I got reman compressor, accum/drier and a bottle of oil as a kit.
HOW MUCH oil shouold i place into the system. I won't be flushing it.. there was no debris..just replacing compressor and drier.
ALSO is there an orifice tube I should clean/look at?

The FSM for my 96 Tracker reads:

Compressor oil capacity------->90cc
Compressor oil type-------->Polyalkaline Glycol (PGA) Oil

Not 100% these two years (91 and 96) share the same A/C compressor though.
1996 Geo Tracker, CAMI, 16 valve, 5sp, 4x4, soft top, 2 door, no a/c

this is a 91 (what's there now, i've not a clue)
what freon system is it running now? what was it and what now? what is the plan?
in 94' this changed.
the orifice is the expansion valve right next to the evap, core. due to small thermal capillary tube stuck in said core to stop freeze up. (icing)
the 2 systems are not compatible, and for sure the oil. (an maybe, hoses and seals) what yours are and what they can stand , no man can answer that.
R12 and R135
btw, kudos for nice effort !

the orig. system shows,
here is a nice GM Corvair post. (my fav car.)

http://corvaircenter.com/phorum/read.php...827,515925

flush out the old
new pag oil or better the ester. universal.
new hoses.

read DR. Fords post, he is very knowledgeable and as we all know a fast moving target, Dupont is constantly trying to make a perfect FREON.
Nothing trivial
and what you can buy on the self is same. (can change at any moment)
and then the R134a.

Basic freon history. 1950s visions...
Freon was invented to avoid the killer ammonia. (like skating rinks use...) and to avoid the CRASH and burn of Propane coolant, but works great. other wise.
but boom you a crispy critter. Freeze 12 hw
Freon was non toxic. if you got a whiff of it. (ask self which would you want the car cab full of , at evap leak time?????) obvious to me, freon.
YMMV

lots of choices, many have issues, see Dr. Ford here.

Freeze 12

some have high flash point, propane.
http://forums.aaca.org/showthread.php?t=...post219961

what most folks want. ????
IT works, if not as good as R12, who cares? ( $100 not a $3500 fix to get best)
and will not kill you.
or leak out.
or trash the compressor.

good luck and cheers !

the key fact is, we dont know what oils was there.
nobody does.
and we see lots of post world wide, "how do tell? what is there"
you can't.
what THEY do is flush it all out. then its a NONE iSSUE.
for all we know, bubba put gun oil in there... right?
these cars are old. and old = unknown.

capacity.
the actual, top grill on top of rad shows, the R12, load.
and the FSM shows the oil.
but if changing to R134, who knows.?
id use what the 1995+ fsm stated.

it states
90cc of PAG. (if using the new universal lube, ask them who much to use in place of 90cc, only THEY know this)
1996
http://www.acksfaq.com/96-FSM-v1-1d-pdf.htm

page 1b29 shows.
3.4oz pag
and 1.3 Pounds of R134a or 600grams.

Already did the R-134 retrofit. altho I never did anything but change out the freon after replacing 4 orings on the top of the compressor that leaked. The AC blew ice cold no problems, but still leaked out the compresor case halves.. recharge brought it back but 4 times in 3 months too much.so i got new compressor.I worked in Ford/GM/Subaru Dealership for 22 years and in the beginning, everybody said 134 retrofit will be thousands of $$.. now you can just swap out the gas and no worries.. wonder what happened?? the "NEW" oils are supposed to be compatable with the old...
I've done many 134 retrofits in my garage for others.. no problems at all.
thanks for the specs.. and i may look for the orifice to be sure its clean!

REDUX.
Who knows what's in a 20 year car, has now, old parts, NOS "new old stock" or aftermarket parts, many of those, leak with R134a. SAE.org has tested many and says, some do some dont work. ( roll the dice, what's to loose?)
the fast forward to 2014 and China junk knock off parts... added to this wild mix of parts.

seals and hoses, some leak other break down,

i like the DuPont new Duracool 12a. best. (hard to getf for USA folks). but is a great Freon, with full COOLING,) and 1600F flash point, 2x that of propane.
their dryer, product too.
and is now, R134 sold with oil present in the can. Now that is a bright idea. I see EPA dont like top offs' they say, not do mix coolants. (what a joke, nobody really knows what's there now. ) to me? , if the compressor is happy, im happy...

Lots of good facts here. in FAQ form too, and has great questions.

all my answer are for South of the boarder. (ymmv, or your laws may vary)
