Timing Issue
#11
Sorry for the multiple replies,
I tried to adjust the pics for being over 500KB, then I tried to adjust for being over 5 pics.
Each time the message went through, I guess....

each time (no pun) you make that radical change,  the distributor must base timed again from scratch, #1 firing (not 4) at crank at 0deg  TDC firing.
as you can see 3 rotor positions, 2 wrong, make that job 3 times more labor...
not counting the gear set wrong, any of 13 teeth. ( wow,  39 permutations of tries, and 1 works right.)
some get fooled that there are 3 locations until they see only ONE location of rotor goes, FULL DOWN SEATED.
your photos all look correct I see the cam lobs on #1 near or on heels.
so  what does the timing light show, even engine cranked and where does the flash happen.? if wrong does moving the distrib clamp let you -5BTDC?  or does the clamp slot block you?

did you check the rotor with dust cover off? so you can see both rotor tip and CMP ROTOR relationship?
the spark wires,  1,3,4,2,  CCW the rotor spins opposite direction to 8v.  so wires are laid down backwards on this engine.

keep in mind with all steps done perfect  if the rotor is installed wrong the CMP timing can never be right.  that is why dust cover off photos are best.

the timing freeze can be a pain
first make sure 800rpm hot.
make sure turning on AC causes 1000 RPM? does it? that tells you the fast idle controls work. (and ISC works and idle switch not stuck open)

A/C is not charged yet, compressessor will not kick in.

Tomorrow, I will put everything back together, again, and get the engine running.
I will place the rotor so the tip is opposite the longest side of the distributor shaft. (what were they thinking?)

I'll test the TPS, bring the engine to temp, and check timing.

I am not opposed to resetting the distributor, 3 times if need be, to get the rotor alignment correct as required.

This whole nut-roll is way more involved than it needs to be.

I'll even make a video of the timing mark.

with a real rotor that fits on this 1 way, the steps are rote.
I have no real good photo of the top of distributor,  with dust cap off,  camera pointed correctly at the rotor mount   , rotor off. all mine are not camera pointed perfectly to see CMP STAR
correctly/. this photo is good but not perfect, camera shot.
the rotor must be correct first, then drop the distributor so the gear is correct (13 teeth) and rotor is pointing to #1 wire  on cap.
this photo is bad 2 ways, camera not aim right, and not #1 firing. on crank pulley 0. I am no fully certain that the long side is not at bottom below.?
the key (no pun) way to get this right is DUST CAP off and make sure the CMP STAR is now worn, (one way wrong never start, other is off 30degrees misfires and way 3 works perfect)

the other horror is below:

let me do one more, photo , to show how CMP will fail.

check this new photo I made, to see the 3 HORROR ROTORS.  ( the below set wrong is all pure horror, that nobody needs ever)

if you look at my new photo, you see that only 1 way  can work right.  1 way is dead, , the other is way off might run ,and only one way is GOLD.
the star metal   leading edge is the trigger, "X"
and only the ECU can advance timing as much as 40degree's BTDC,  at high RPM (once the static timing is set) ECU runs the show.

now more humor (jaws1) Grin!

good no 1000 rpm idle and no dead timing freeze jumper (that jumper can fail for up to 9 reasons,) even the steering overload switch shorted can case 1000 RPM. yah,
this suzuki has very active spark advance at idle , to save  ton fuel. and lower smog and not over stress the CAT too much. thus the freeze.

So, after reading all the comments here (and THANK YOU VERY MUCH everyone for your help), I:
1) rotated the engine to #1 TDC
2) aligned the dimple on the distributor gear with the notch on the distributor housing
3) installed the distributor, knowing the shaft would rotate due to the helical distributor gear, and
4) placed the rotor in the distributor to align with the #1 distributor cap position.

Engine started, ran smooth, timing marks aligned with timing light.

Again, Thanks to all for your contributions!

I also had a bad MAF sensor.
Runs great now but (there's always a but) the trans bearings make noise, and yes, fluid and level correct.
Time to buy the bearing/syncro kit. $70 Ebay - Any good?

well what bearings are in the kit,  matters.
most china made are no good, (300 makers most junk)
the bearings have makers stamp mark and number.

KOYO is best in the west (Japan)
Timken USA< or National, or  other top European names like FAG and SKS and more. Fed-Mogal, Beck_Arnley ,

All that hard work  and labor to do this and using bad bearings will not be a happy day.

ebay sellers can be anyone, even kid in basement. (fleamarket)
nobody knows what they sell unless you ask them.
