97 Tracker Speed sensor 'A'
#1
My 97 Tracker (4WD automatic w/locking hubs) is throwing a code (PO500) for "Speed sensor A". My speedo and cruise will not function. Does anyone on the forum know where 'Speed sensor A' is located? Huh
Thank you, Jack

which trans, 4speed or 3? (the 4 speed has its own vss2, and if it fails, the backup is used, in the head speedo guts)
The cruise i think only runs off VSS1 in the head.

in the speed head
does the odometer work? if yes the reed will click.,

vss1 is in the speedo, its a reed switch,
vss2, is on tail end main transmission, if 4speed , or end of 4wd box.

vss1 reed

the cable there is dead. (the odometers almost never fail, so is prime clue there) (in your case all 3fail) so... cable is not turning, only why remains.
see words here ,snapped.

Hi Fixkick, If the cable breaks will it throw a code (PO500) for the speed sensor and disable the cruise control? When you press the cruise switch the light comes on, but no cruise.
Thank you again, Russ

yes, the cable runs 3 things.
odom
speedo
and the VSS vehicle sensor.
when the 3 go dead, vss is dead. and so be the cruse.
your 3 speed car has only 1 vss sensor,
its dead.
its dead because the cable is not turning
find out why it will no spin,
cable bad or fell off either end.
the rear of the transfer case gear spins the cable, its not spinning.

What is the best way to re-install the rubber grommet that goes thru the firewall? Is it OK to slice thru it and spread it apart so the cable sheathing can be pushed into it prior to install? Also, I broke the 2 in white plastic clamping device that holds the cable tight onto the firewall. What is the best way to replace it so my cable is secured and can't move around? Are you aware of someplace to find a used instrument cluster should I need to replace mine. Can I rebuild mine? I'm not having any luck finding one online I've tried eBay and amazon. Again, thank you ! so much ! for all your help. Regards, Russ

what grommet, ? speedo cable?
these parts are not sold now;.
if suzuki, or GM (geo) show the part discontinued it is.
clusters used are on ebay, but many are no good, any of 1 to 5 + meters inside or more things inside.
so on mine had to buy 2 clusters same and mix parts. (same bottom sticker number on the cluster)
my cluster pages shows all the bad news here.
what fails? you never said which feature inside fail. its not the VSS , as that is a cable that does not spin, causes VSS to fail
