1998 Tracker - Idle issues and stalling and at my wits end
#11
So I tried to test the fuel pressure and check the ignition timing today ... failed at both.

I grabbed a MP fuel pressure kit, nothing fits the test port...

As for the ignition timing, I will admit I just have no idea what I'm doing. I going to need a video or get a friend to show me how it's done. Or just do some more reading.

It was running really great today, 0 stalls for the hour or so I was working on it. The only time it wanted to stall (but it caught itself) was when I turned off the fans (full blast) and the headlights at the same time, so when the load is lifted once again. Weather was good today (no salt on the road) took it for a spirited drive around town. Lots of WOT and cruising, idling. avg 22 MPG. I pulled the #1 plug from the troublesome cyinder, look how nice it looks today! Not black.

The problem is still hiding though... even though no stalls today.

On another note, how can I speed up the OBD readiness? Is there a specific cycle? Ever since I changed the o2 sensor it stall hasn't been ready.

the G16b fuel rail takes THIS special 14mm adaptor ,.
here
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATM-2267/
replaces #3 ,fitting is regular usa NPT, pipe fitting, not metric. once installed. easy to to cap off. later.

the filter on the g16/a/b both have a banjo bolt. and a 6mm threaded, iSO screw sizes. that fits special hose,, the $19 harbor freight kit has this hose

sure glad to see perfect spark plug,...

readiness monitors
speed up
the 2 hard ones
are
Drive fast say 45-50 mph, light flat ground, easy cruise, test A clears, then take say and off ramp and lite car coast to stop in gear, test be clears.
EGR clears.
then the pest, EVAP, will not clear until tank is 1/4 to 1/2 empty, and can take 1/2 hr driving, depends on if Evap 1,,2 level, those years.

if idle drops, now hot, I say, turn bleed out 1 turn (top rear of TB)
I think its not misfiring
and fuel pressure is ok
engine ok
The duty cycle setting is pain, if lucky we can use DMM on the ISC wires. late

spark is easy
1;hot engine ,800rpm
2: connect mag coupling to front #1 HV wire
INSERT PAPER CLIP TO (UNBENT) TO FREEZE PINS, DLC JACK.
3: point gun at top of crank pulley
4: PULL TRIGGER, SEE STROBE FLASH.
5:SEE IT LAND 5DEG LEFT ON SCALE. my guess ,its dead on..... if way off tell me,, id not worry 1 degr..

THE FREEZE JUMPER , PREVENTS rapid advance bouncing (normal at idle)
my horsed up
drawing

recap.
the tps switch must be closed at every time right foot leaves, gas pedal. o
or idle goes wild. (wonky)
i bet fuel pressure is prefect
i dont bet idle switch is calibrated.
i bet duty cycle is off (ISC calibration is what this means)

did you say 02 monitor, not complete. front or rear?
front should be fast. like down street fast the rear will not run until front works perfect.rear is cat test. and that times time too.

i thing lots of the important things are A-OKAY

good night and happy trails.

I've been really busy lately, so I haven't had much time to pick at the tracker. I did get new plug wires (NGK), fuel filter (wix) and timing belt kit (gates) in the mail. I also got my elm327 adapter, so I now have some more info about how it's running. I had it for a spin today, and it ran perfect. I think seafoam may have fixed it, crazy...

I have a .lgf file here is anyone knows how to create meaningful graphs, I can't figure out how to just export a graph as a picture, or how to customize the length of the x-axis. I also tried to create a csv file, which I am more familiar with but it won't open because it says the cells exceed the character limits...

I can also now see what readiness monitors are not ready. Catalyst, evap system and egr system monitoring are still not ready. Currently have about a 10% full tank of fuel. I would really like to see those come online. It's been over a week now.

readiness
cat
evap
egr
(to clear them you must drive, (around the block, is not going to work) the slow one evap can take 3mins.
if you have DTC errors, some freeze until cured, like that Cat test,. the can test can only run if all else is ok, (pcm logic does that)
the cvs load in to my excel easy
that CVS is full of useless data (VAST), MAF works, i see that.!!
but to data log , you need to loG only live sensor data and avoid all those CALC> values, created by that scan tool. endless CALCs and N/A columns. LIKE G FORCES ETC... GPS DATA,...
what is correct is
all sensors (MAF, IAT, ECT, RPM, LOAD , TPS ANGLE)
LTFT
02 data. B1S1 only
speed MPH.

ON MY TOOL I CAN CHEERY PICK DATA TO LOG, EVEN JUST ONE THING.

EVAP NEEDS AIR SPACE ON TOP OF THE TANK TO WOORK

THE lgf ONLY WORKS ON YOUR TOOL , I THINK FOR PLAY BACK.

FOR SURE, MOST MONITORS WILL NOT CLEAR
ON ANY COLD ENGINE
OR IDLING
MOST TAKE DRIVING, THE EPA MANDATES THOSE RULES. and are very strict when they happen
in the service manual easy is explained, for the conditions to run and complete all monitors
engine must be, hot, speed, vacuum, throttle angles , engine load.. and even fue;l tank not full rules.
each monitor has its own rules for starting a test, and ending a test .
if DTC are present , many tests can be halted.
the 02 (front) failing causes the CAT monitor to halt, dead.

most need hot engine, and driving hard. for up to 30 minutes
if you push reset on scan tool its rests this too
as does driving with a bad dome fuse
or pulling the battery cables.

in all cases a 30 minute drive over 45mph gets them all. (dome fuse working)
