1993 Sidekick JX CEL issues - brocklanders - 07-22-2014

Love the site!!! I just picked up 93 4 door kick, 5 speed 1.6 16 valve with a constant CEL, I couldn't find a NAG switch so I am assuming it was removed by PO. The main issue I am having along with various others is that mileage is horrible 15 mpg on a good day and the CEL will not flash when jumped just stays on. Now strangely it doesn't run all that rich but no smoke or anything like being in limp mode. Should I get a new ECU? on a side note it does have a patched manifold that is starting to crack again at the number 4 tube but even when it was patched and the ECU flashed (pulled the dome fuse) the mileage never improved. Any suggestions?

hello.
93, California cars,(hood sticker says calif, and fed, regs) has no NAG. only USA pure FED cars, a fed car is a non calif car.
read that under hood sticker (open hood, look up, see calif?)(
see calif kick here
[Image: cal-tag2.jpg]

doom fuse resets all stored, DTC errors.
constant CEL, and the 6pin DLC jumper fails to make it flash ,means there is a nag switch.
lets get the codes first, im sure it has the nag....
if the hood sticker dont say california compliance its a FED car with NAG.

the MPI cars NAG

Unified, nag drawings...

the ecu is upset. most likely bad inputs.(sensors fibbing) I always pull these old ECU and look for leaking caps or the killer, Rubycons.

all fed cars have nag, 89-95

nag means the leaded gas , inspection, a thing long gone and useless idea. and same with switch,

Code 53 Sad I found the Nag switch thank you! Unfortunately when I jumped the connector it flashed 53 checked the grounds and all had good connections. Will pull the ecu and check the caps in the next day or so. Strangely it runs pretty well.

RE: 1993 Sidekick JX CEL issues - fixkick - 07-23-2014

ok ,some one put fed, ecu in a Cal car or reverse.?
or someone put a fed, EGR on a Cal car.
so that means if your car is a FED car, and some one put in a CALIF, ECU, you get 53s.
all this is easy to find.
letes start at easy. (easy was that sticker, i have no response on that)
what do we know?, we know for 3 reasons, that this is a fed car, the NAG switch is present. (ecu P/N and hood sticker both prove the car is fed harness)
but a nag proves, FED speedo...

so the hood sticker is devoid of Calif. right?
then open hood. and look at the EGR valve.
does it have 2 wires to it?

1993 the first EGR used on the G16B was a new deviced, EGR thermo sensor, in the side, and a new ECU to match, if you run a FED ecu, bam ,code
in 1994 (unknow body serial) the started using the new EGR , from calif ,in both, cars, that all changed in 1996, when they went to EGR MAP,way.

now the correct ECU. i have page listing every ECU used in N. America. (includes canada)
its not just the ECU , wrong, its wrong harness. the fed car has its own harness.

ECU; PAge 3
http://www.fixkick.com/ECU/EPC-ECU96-98/all_other_years/89-95/89-95NA.pdf

58B30 is correct ECu
did some PO,. put in a 58B10? or other? listed there....
my guess is yes.

but i need hood sticker only that tells what the car came with new, and what harness is in car.
also on some ECU the harness pins have extra grounds. to tell ECU, that its CALIF, time.
there is a trick to fool calif ECU, seen on the ECU page. under Calif.

what the ECU does (punish wise) for 53s is not documented on earth.
but it might go to FAILSAFE.
nor does it document if you have 53s? can and will the ECU run all other monitors ok? and report other problems? all a deep dark , Suzuki secret,.. so 53s are first. first order failures.

more facts, if car has CAL ECU
the EGR Thermoprobe (EGRT) , open , dead , or disconnected will throw 53s as will its Red-green wire, in fact 2, the Fed car has no such wire near the EGR at all.

what does your sticker say?
what ECU ,do you have

ecu pull or find, or view. see here

an ECU tag looks like this.

the 56 or 58Bxx part is very very important.

I will snap a photo of the sticker tomorrow ( today is my wedding anniversary and my wife would flip if I decided to work on the Zuk LOL!) I will pull the ECU and check the part number at the same time. Is there a way to make the Cali ECU work if this in fact the culprit or do I need to source a good FED ECU?

On a side note I have a sick feeling about the ECU being wrong as the PO stumbled on his words when questioned about the CEL ( he made some comment about a sensor being CALI and the ECU being FED but he was not mechanically inclined one bit so who knows)

RE: 1993 Sidekick JX CEL issues - fixkick - 07-24-2014

Happy Anniversary !!!
so the hood sticker is free of all califonial words?
the EGR is with no 2 wires ? the eGR main, valve. ?

the sticker is 1st. please look there first so we can save lots of work and agony. nothing else matters. now.

if the sticker shows Calif, you then look at the EGR main, 2 wires. are there on all CALIF 93s, if the wires are there, Plug) but not the sensor on EGR, this means some own put the FED egr in a California car. (yes a 10k ohm resistor fools ecu)
but if the hood shows FED (no calif words) then there is no EGR to see, no wires.
in this case the ECU must be FED ecu.

now to answer your question, sure it can be fooled. but i need to know what the sticker says first???

my first post shows CAL car, it's very clear. is yours CAL?

this same bs, will happen over and over, on CAL cars. for new exhaust, and other odd bits.

I am pretty sure it doesn't state california anywhere on the sticker but I have been driving my truck as I have the dash torn apart in the Zuk. I will look when I get home and snap a pic. Thanks for all of your help!!!

RE: 1993 Sidekick JX CEL issues - fixkick - 07-24-2014

ok its a fed car. (good and the nag told me that, but just incase the speedometer was changed?, the hood sticker and the nag tell me its fed car, for sure.
so next is ECU tag
im pretty sure its calif. ECU, and is easy to prove.
the screws can be a beach. #3 (not 2) Philips.
assumes the tag can not be seen with flashlight. many can.
58Bxx the xx tells me if cal. or fed.
good progress !
