Code 23 questions - Phishown - 08-28-2017

Hello new to forum. Looking forward to getting some help on my 1993 Suzuki Sidekick 16v 4door. The sidekick does not have a IAT sensor from factory from my understanding. I swapped the engine out last year with a 95' tracker 16v. The sidekick has been throwing code 23 every sense. What are my options? Do I need to add an IAT. If so how do I add it to the wiring harness?

RE: Code 23 questions - fixkick - 08-28-2017

sure, and confusing,
that is correct 92/93, some have no IAT, nor a harness to fit it.
if you get code 23, its no lie. the ecu does no lie to you.

23 means its missing , or wires cut to it.
the IAT does not do much on any 16v , its mostly to comply with CALIF ARB laws...
the MAF already measure air temps and does all the 99.9% fine tuning so thus no IAT.
so wire in a resistor. 1000 ohms (need no be exactly) this is 100f tad more. than that. and it runs
or get a 92/93 ECU.
you must have used 95 ECU.
what transmission, 4wd ? or 2wd?
or changed harnesses.
i dont know what you did, what was changed, in details.
ECU, engine yes, harness? or just lost the air cleaner box and iAT port on side.????

the 58B30 ecu has no IAT nor code 23.
per my page
http://www.fixkick.com/ECU/EPC-ECU96-98/all_other_years/89-95/89-95NA.pdf

as you can see the calif 93 has the IAT. first usage 92. there. and then standardized in 1994/95 up.

if all you want to do is fool ECU say so
or get it working with ECU due to smog testing.
in calif if they see custom air cleaner box and missing IAT you fail... see?
i need all the facts here to know what you need.
smog
transmssion
4wd
and current eCU p/n.

and what you want.

cheers ! thanks for posting.

I kept the original harness. Did not used the airbox from donor vehicle. The sidekick is 4 door 5 speed 4x4. If I remember correctly I did swap the ECU out just to be on the safe side. I do have the old ECU. Should I simply put the original ECU in help solve my issue with the check engine light? I was having an issue with stumbling at idle and lack of power but I determined that ended up being the catalytic converter partially clogged. Which raises another question can I simply remove the catalytic converter. The sidekick is at my shop so I asking the next question blindly. Are there any 02 sensors in or around the converter?

RE: Code 23 questions - fixkick - 08-28-2017

there you go.. you used the wrong ECU. sorry , to tell you... but .. yah.
the old ECU used no iAT
and all newer ones do, 94+ it was added. (unless in calif , there added day1)
its that easy.
run the ECU for the car, not the engine. the engine is the same, (long block) (ECU ,+harness + all orig. sensors , injectors, etc, all EFI parts keep as a MATCH)
the cat melts when the ECU goes to limphome mode.
the IAT is in the offical lists of if bad, limphome mode happens (called Suzuki fail safe. )
see right photo here.,
limphome causes horrible rich fuel conditions and the cat melts.

the o2 is on the header not the cat,, there are 2 exh mans used long and short (fed and calif) but both have the 1 and only 02. until 1996 fed laws kicked in , then 2.
the IAT is mandatory, (the effect is minor but the limphome rules, wrecks that, fact)

the fuel burned can be like 15mpg, not 28. so that is the 2nd huge clue after CEL glowing .
the cat can even glow red hot, trying so hard to burn up all that wasted fuel..... most just melt. and block the exh. flows. and some so bad car cant even start unless the cat is dropped off header.

see left table here for your car, this is factory book photo, ATS = IAT (old new names from SAE.org

RE: Code 23 questions - fixkick - 08-28-2017

once fixed, you will be shocked how nice it runs.... exiting LIMP mode. (jeep calls this Limp-in)btw
one guy hear called it grenade mode, I still laugh when i think of that phrase..

Ok so I changed out the ECU back to the one that was on it before the engine swap. No more code 23. However, I'm getting a code 53. Before I trace down all the grounds could this be the wrong ECU for the 93' Siedkick? This ECU is 33920-58B30.

Thanks for all the help.

RE: Code 23 questions - Phishown - 08-29-2017

Read many post about code 53....It appears that the code 53 is for California kicks. I can't find the word California anywhere under hood on the stock stickers. I'm pretty sure I don't have a California Car. I can see that the ECU is a Reman from 2002. So I'm thinking this is a California ECU in a "Federal " Car hence the code 53. Am I barking up the right tree here?

RE: Code 23 questions - Phishown - 08-30-2017

I unplugged egr wire and CEL went off. Is this ok to run it like this?

RE: Code 23 questions - fixkick - 08-30-2017

this is all easy stuff, type DTC on my web sited, DTC 53.

SURE IT IS
THE UNDERHOOD STICKER CLEARLY SHOWS THE WORDS CALIFORNIA
IF NOT then somebody put in a CALIF ECU or the EGR therm sensors is missing

why not post your ecu NUMBER, so we can end this guessing game>? the numbers are all on that PDF i posted and is under ECU help .

a calif car has these parts...
1: the hood sticker says, calif, not just fed usa. (ASSUMES NO HOOD SWAPS, WOW) THE BELOW Photo see calif, there, (wrong engine) but words in the region are same if calif....for SURE.
http://www.fixkick.com/specs/Body-TAGS/html/image_7.html

2: the ECU is CALF.
3: the harness is calif. (if ecu is calif, but harness is FEd the CALIF pin floats and 53 are now forever set (this is ARB laws in calif this rule) THIS Stops owners from mixing fed/cal parts. (partially)
4: the EGR thermo sensors is present and works and not missing or fell off, or is bad ,ask how to fool it, its covered on my code 53 page.
5: Calif exhaust and for share that long header exhaust manifold. \
6: calif EVAP system. (may have)
7: Calif mandated, IAT present and working, (in fact the first 16v sold in calif are the first 16v with IAT SENSOR,
8: CALIF BANNED THE 8V ENGINE THEN, SO.... YAH. (AT COLD START 8V ARE SMOGGY IS THE REASON)

53 is covered here.
http://www.fixkick.com/EGR-H3LL.html

warning, 53 on some years mean bad ECU,. but I think not this case.

wrong ECU, missing EGRT, the hack is there. read that?
here are all USA ECU p/n... this is out of the SUZ< parts catalog with my comments to show what the codes mean.

see the.
tell the helper what ECU you have first
then we can go to solving real problems..

if this was new car, youd scan the PCM and it will show WRONG VIN.

and the dealer would REFLASH the EEPROM in you ECU to they exact car you drive, and all options. on it.
your car is not like any of that.
back in 90s we replaced the whole ECU, THERE IS NO FLASH INSIDE, SORRY , NOT YET.

THAT IS IT,

WHAT ECU DO YOU HAVE, WITH THAT INFO I CAN GIVE YOU ALL CHOICES...even the fool EGRT trick.
cheers and good luck.

RE: Code 23 questions - fixkick - 08-30-2017

well that is a California EGR.
well that tells me the harness is CALIF but you hood is FED> oops, now that is hard to figure out, no??
no ECU p/n told by you yet, why?

http://www.fixkick.com/ECU/EPC-ECU96-98/all_other_years/89-95/89-95NA.pdf

33920- (all ecu have this prefix it means ECU)
suffix.
58B10 and 58b50 are both calif, ECU. 92 then 93 then B90 and last was 70EA0

each ECU has its own personalities, (smog laws) so how can it guess what you have, Impossible
why make this so hard?

the ecu is behind the left speaker, all have tag on it.
my page covers this.
a stock car has plastic cover on top so when it rains in rag top or the windshied breaks water can not get to this dry only ECU.
that means seeing the ECU tag, is harder, means a mirror there may not see it. so out it comes with #3 phillps driver, not smaller.
