No air leaks. I tested with starting fluid.
I can see that the idle stop is resting where it is supposed to.
The TV cable is disconnected, so not holding it open.
Tested MAF, good readings.
TPS is good and has been replaced. Good voltage readings.

ok no air leaks found
do the ISC is bad
only the ISC is the path of, air flow. on a hot engine, if all leaks are gone ,ISC is bad. (stuck)
keep in mind all engines, Vacuum plenum, love to find leaks, and do, and will suck air, by any means it can,,, and lots of ways there are, even injector cushions leak.
do you have the device i showed you>(cold start fast idleSmile

SEE this, but if the stops are ok,, (this device, raise the stops)

so ISC is bad, stuck or just needs cleaning its and electromagnetic(motor) driven air valve.
they fail, easy, with EGR gasses and PCV gasses from H3ll there. all do.

the ECU told you,it cant control idle
The RPM guage, shows 1200, tell you it can control idle
that means air leaks

aka, vacuum leaks same thing.
if the plenum has no leaks, (normal hot ) then only the ISC is the 1 and only air supply, and is failing)'TV closed 100%
I pinch all vacuum hoses, at failed 1200rpm to see who leaks(now) and who does not.
finding gasket leaks more hard.
even egr, isc base gaskests can leak, or seen MISSING.
so can injector base cushion(or 0ring base side)
even TB base gasket bad
even brake booster diaphram cracked

the ISC test, might work
remove it.
keep plugged in,
key on 3 times and person 2, looks at iSC guts
it cycles, 1 time. to reset it self.(software)
if not its jammed. check is coils yet for same ohms,? 10-15ohms, my guess.

800rpm hot
900rpm hot a/.c on
1200 is dead wrong.hot if really hot.

i dont think any J18/20 engine has TB bleeds screw, i thing the ECU does all that magic. (has more dynamic range)

Tell me about it pal. Rust is a destroyer.

I too have learned the lesson, but the hard way. Bought without checking and suffered loss and frustration. I can laugh over my mistake now, but at that time I was just pulling my hair.

Sorry for you.Guess what there is someone(me) else who got the rust by it own. Tongue

Well, almost everyone has been a victim of trust at one time or other. Me - many times!

RE: 97 Sidekick Sport 1.8L - CUTS OUT AT 1/4 THROTTLE - fixkick - 04-06-2019

cut outs are not easy to find for sure if intermittant.

could be bad COP coils. or even the silly $15 boots on the tips rotted to hell as all are this old.
spark bad.
maf weak or dirty. (but will bog, not cut out and misfire,
misfiring is violent and most times spark (or flooding fuel)
maf weak is like dragging a huge 1000 weight.

RE: 97 Sidekick Sport 1.8L - CUTS OUT AT 1/4 THROTTLE - fixkick - 04-06-2019

the word cut out is not really clear. (no language is in this regard)
if it cuts out does it self correct with a fast right foot? pressed.
if the cut out lasts , does it, does the engine die and car starts coasting, ? does it? is the transmissing a 5 speed stick
if yes, you can leave it say in 4th gear at 45mph and the cars slowing slows the engine down in gear, and if you wiggle the ignition key does the engine wake up.
with the automatic you can do that, like we can due to the front transmissing oil pump is dead on a stalled engine. so diagnosis is harder.

the CUT out must can be found but is harder on COP coil engines.
the j18 has 4 cop coils and 97 had no fire wall ignitor to fail.
what is very hard is scoping the coil Highvoltage leads.
this J18 and J20 all love to fill the spark wells full of oil, no serviced valve cover gasket and the 4 spark well seals. and floods in oil and misfires.
It is very hard to test HV spark with out making or buying COP extension device, that makes it tall and can now use ignition thing light or inductive scope probe to see spark live.
if it can be made to cut out parked this makes things very easy.
does it>?

a prime goal in cars like this, is to find a way to make it fail parked, and running. even using a A/T trans and an engine loading device. parked
can you?
